Chapter 7

The drive from the newspaper to Coffee Cat Books was a short one. Most of the shops along Main Street had brought in their sidewalk displays when the wind picked up, announcing the impending storm. I glanced out over the marina as I pulled into one of the parking spaces in front of the bookstore. There were dark, heavy-looking clouds on the horizon. I felt a tingle up my spine as my intuition whispered that this was going to be a bad one.

The first thing I noticed after climbing down from Cody’s truck was the large white cat sitting on the bench near the front door of the bookstore.

“I thought I might run into you here,” I said to Moirai. “You should have let Tara know what you were doing. You scared the poor thing half to death.”

“Meow.” Moirai jumped off the bench and began to purr as he rubbed against my legs.

“I take it there’s a reason for your visit?”

He turned and began to walk down the wharf toward Main Street.

“Wait,” I shouted. “I need to get a few things for Tara and then I’ll follow you.”

Moirai ignored my plea and continued to trot down the wharf and around the corner.

“Dang cat,” I muttered under my breath as I took off at a jog. Hopefully I would catch up with him before he disappeared from sight.

I increased my pace when I realized Moirai was more than a block ahead of me. By the time I caught up with him, I was beginning to breathe hard after the effort required to run against the strong wind. The cat turned onto Second Street and then darted into the small passageway between the buildings that emptied onto the alley that ran behind the buildings on Main. He made his way over to a battered blue wooden door and sat down in front of it.

“This is the back door to the old T-shirt shop. They went out of business almost a year ago. The shop is empty.”

“Meow.”

I glanced at the parking area across the street. There did seem to be a lot of cars parked near the deserted shop. I tried the handle on the door and it gave way. Moirai trotted inside and I followed, walking as quietly as I could.

The rear of the building had been used for storage and was currently empty. It was separated from the main part of the store, which had been the retail space, by a wall with a connecting door. The storage area might be empty, but I could hear voices coming from the front of the building. I slowly made my way to the door separating the two spaces and glanced inside. There were maybe twelve folding chairs arranged in a circle, each occupied by an adult male. Half of the group had their backs to me and I didn’t recognize any of the men facing me with the exception of Ray Green, a parishioner at St. Patrick’s. I stood perfectly still so as not to be detected as I listened to the conversation.
